I bought a Hyundai Inster when I moved back to the UK from New Zealand. It’s a small electric car but it costs so much more to fuel it than it does to fuel my dad’s ICE Toyota Corolla hybrid because I cannot park it outside my house.

The cheapest public charger is at Tesco which is 44p a kilowatt hour. But the cheapest charger in my village is 55p per kilowatt hour, 31p more than my off peak electricity rate. And charging there is only possible if the people who can’t get parking spaces don’t block the charger(apparently the parish has no ability to stop this from happening because the car park is free.)

And now there is talk of charging per miles driven which will make it even more uneconomic. I would prefer to rely on public transport, but that is patchy in the countryside and nonexistent after dark. Cycling is too dangerous after dark. I would still have bought an electric car knowing all of this, because I want to minimise my emissions over the lifespan of the vehicle, but we need cheaper public charging, especially in areas where there is limited public transport.
